According to the Puranas, when the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) worked together to churn the ocean in search of Amrit, the nectar of immortality, a terrifying poison named Halahala surfaced. To protect the universe from this impending doom, Lord Shiva bravely consumed the poison and held it in his throat. This act turned his throat blue, which is how he got the name &#8220;Neelkanth&#8221; (where Neel means Blue and Kanth means Throat).
